Long Wheelbase bents feel like a Lincoln Town Car on two wheels. You can feel the frame flex that really smoothes out the ride.It’s early on a beautiful, sunny morning. The air still has some of the cool crispness left over from the night. The trees are fully decked out in their finest greenery. Squirrels scamper from one spot to the next. Blue Jays are raising their usual fuss, and they sky seems like it could go on forever.You are rolling down the road on your recumbent taking all of this in like a breath of fresh air. Fresh air, with a hint of Jasmine, or maybe Magnolia blossoms brings a smile to your face, as the thought enters your mind that this is something you would expect to see in a movie. Think this only happens to someone else? Riding down quiet country roads where there are pastures with cattle and horses, and the smell of freshly cut hay in the air. A gentle breeze is in my face and I have just passed an orange grove in full bloom. The aroma of the blossoms is almost too strong as I fill my nostrils with as much of it as lungs will allow. Checking the distance ridden, over 6 miles have flown by and it seems like it has only been minutes. Twenty miles from start to finish and it’s coming up on the house with the huge slabs of limestone that have artfully been made into a fence. Around the curve the scream of a peacock greets me, and just a little further down the race along the fence will begin with the Great Dane, if he hears the peacock’s warning. The chestnut mare and her foal watch curiously as the wheels keep on rolling.There’s a sign up ahead advertising wooded lots for sale. Seems a shame to ruin such a pristine view to plant houses that won’t grow and sit empty most of the time. A Fishawk glides overhead looking for a meal, perhaps unaware that his habitat is slowly disappearing. Today it’s still here to enjoy, and tomorrow is a new day. Perhaps the sun will be shining again and that peacock won’t see me coming to tell the Great Dane to get ready. If the speed is 23 mph at the driveway he looses before the end of the fence row. The turnaround is coming up so a nice wide turn is necessary. Backtracking from the halfway point it goes too fast. Past the orange grove and then it’s to the slight downhill where the speed will hit 42 mph with the fairing. Got to keep it going till the bridge and then coast a little. Keep an eye out for that goofy German Shepherd that got in front of me a few months ago and then is was nothing but asphalt. Manicured lawns coming on the right and then the slight uphill that goes past the miniature horses on the left. Gotta watch behind so there are no surprises from the middle of the road for the left hand turn coming up. Easy does it and around the curve to the home stretch. Twenty miles in 49 minutes with the fairing and the average speed is just over 22 mph. Life is good on a long wheelbase.
